The North Shore Gear Hack: Skip the Resort Shops, Hit the Hardware Store

Giant outdoor games at Starfall Lodge

Sleds, snow toys, chains, beach gear — the local trick for not paying resort-town prices is the Ace Hardware in Kings Beach, with a bigger selection at the Ace in Incline Village.

The hack

Every ski town has two prices for the same sled: the one at the shop next to the lifts, and the one at the hardware store ten minutes away. In Tahoe, the hardware stores stock a surprising amount of mountain gear — sleds and snow toys, tire chains, gloves and hand warmers, beach and BBQ gear in summer, wax, straps, and every fix-it item a rental house trip generates — at normal-town prices.

Ace Hardware, Kings Beach

The closest option to Tahoe Vista is the Ace Hardware in Kings Beach, about five minutes from the lodge. It is the grab-and-go stop: a sled the morning after a storm, chains before one, sunscreen and a spatula in July. When a snow day materializes and every kid in the house needs a saucer, this is where you go.

Ace Hardware, Incline Village

For a deeper selection, drive fifteen minutes to the Ace in Incline Village. It is bigger, and in winter that means more sled styles and sizes still on the rack when the Kings Beach store has been picked over. Pair the trip with the Raley’s next errand over and you have covered groceries, gear, and (if you drive an EV) a charge in one loop.

What to still rent

The hack has limits: skis, snowboards, and boots belong at a proper rental shop, where the gear is tuned and fitted. Rental shops in Kings Beach, Incline Village, and at the resorts handle that side. The hardware store covers everything around the edges — which is most of what a cabin weekend actually consumes.

Already at the lodge

Before you buy anything, check the garage: Starfall Lodge keeps gear racks stocked for guests, and the game room, karaoke lounge, and giant outdoor games cover the entertainment side. Buy the sled, borrow the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I buy a cheap sled near Tahoe Vista?

Skip the resort shops and go to a hardware store: the Ace Hardware in Kings Beach is about five minutes from Tahoe Vista, and the larger Ace in Incline Village (about 15 minutes) has a deeper selection after storms.

Where should I buy tire chains for Tahoe?

Hardware and auto-parts stores in Kings Beach, Incline Village, and Truckee stock chains at normal prices. Buy them before a storm arrives — prices and availability both get worse once chain controls go up on the highways.

Where can I rent skis near Tahoe Vista?

Use a proper rental shop for skis, snowboards, and boots — there are shops in Kings Beach and Incline Village, plus on-mountain rentals at Northstar, Diamond Peak, Mt. Rose, and Palisades Tahoe. Save the hardware store for sleds, chains, and everything else.
